標高1,102.5mの風不死岳は、アイヌ語のフプシ（トドマツのあるところ）が語源とされています。その名のとおり、山頂近くまでトドマツが群生しているほか、エゾマツや落葉広葉樹を交える森林に覆われているため、湖水の風景に四季折々の彩りを添えています。
