※道道78号線のオコタンペ湖展望台から美笛キャンプ場までの区間は2020年６月から法面崩落のため通行止めとなっています（国道453号線から道道78号線オコタンペ湖展望台までは通行可能です。）。※
オコタンペ湖は、阿寒湖近くのオンネトー、然別湖近くの東雲湖と並び、北海道3大秘湖と称される神秘の湖です。
恵庭岳の西山麓にある周囲5km、最大深度21.1mのせきとめ湖で、鬱蒼と繁る原生林に抱かれ、天候や見る角度・時間によって、湖水の色がエメラルドグリーンやコバルトブルーなどに変化して見えます。
オコタンペ湖周辺の森林は、針葉樹と落葉広葉樹が自生している針広混交林となっています。多様で原生的なこの天然林を保存するため、森林生態系保護地域（森林法）に指定されています。
また、支笏洞爺国立公園の特別保護地区（自然公園法）にも指定されており、豊かな自然環境が保全されています。オコタンペ湖は道道78号側にある展望台から眺めます。
